A.S.A.P.

I receive a complicated reply to my son's birthday party invitation.

The child's father's girlfriend's parent's friend and neighbour will bring his child to the party.

I take a deep breath.

I remind myself that blended families are the new norm, that the nuclear family is a myth of the past.

Although I don't know the current divorce statistics, I do know that those families with children with special needs are quite startlingly real.

I reply in a kindly fashion.

I count my blessings.

I was always very impressed that my friend Cyndi and her husband stuck together with as much trouble as they've had with Daniel as I know that so many couples with autistic children can't survive the difficulties and the marriage ends up suffering the consequences.

Blessings to all of you who survive the statistics and keep your families together.

Once went to a child's party -- the kid was in joint custody of two moms, who had split up and each found new partners. Four moms, all from big families and all with lots of sisters. There were maybe 30 adult women at the party and everyone one of them was an aunt! Fun but crazy and I just plain gave up on sorting things out.
